Gozo Channel exonerated by Board of Inquiry
Gozo Channel Co Ltd has been officially informed by the Minister of Finance that the Board of Inquiry commissioned after allegations made publicly by one of its Masters has found that these allegations are substantially and materially unfounded. The Minister has made the document available to the public after tabling it in Parliament.
A spokesman for the company said that the Board had expressed its profound satisfaction that its position had been vindicated by a professional and independent body.
The fact that the allegations made by Capt. Mario Grech were found to be unsubstantiated was not a surprise to the Board, which had always been confident that the company's management was carrying out its collective duty towards the public and the company professionally and competently.
The Board, however, expressed its regret that such a volume of negative publicity had been generated by the irresponsible actions of a single individual, whose actions were given undue credibility by the manner in which his unfounded allegations had sometimes been reported by sections of the media.
The Board will now be examining the overall circumstances of the case, especially in the light of the fact that the unfounded allegations were made at a particularly sensitive juncture in the commercial context, and taking the appropriate steps.
The Board pledged to give effect to a number of suggestions for improvement that the Board of Inquiry had made, considering these suggestions to be fully in line with the company's philosophy of always seeking to improve the product it made available to its valued customers. A number of these suggestions have already been given effect.
